Since 1932, Highlander has been a catalyst for grassroots organizing and movement building in Appalachia and the U.S. South. As a school and home for movement, we provide programs, resources, support, and space for people directly impacted by social injustices to build leadership, build collective power, and develop solutions for change in our lives and communities that transform systems, structures, and society.

Homecoming is our favorite weekend of the year at Highlander, bringing together hundreds of movement family from around the globe who join for fellowship, shared learning and strategizing, singing and dancing, and deepening relationships over a meal, a beautiful view of the mountains, or in the quiet moments the Hill provides.

This year, for the second year in a row, we're bringing that spirit online to honor and recognize our 89th anniversary with the theme “Reflecting and Rising."

As Highlander prepares to move into our 90th year in 2022 with an eye on the next decade of movement work that will be necessary to meet the many challenges of our times, we will take this Homecoming weekend as an opportunity to look back over the last 10 years and reflect on the political landscape and lived realities that brought us to this moment.

This is also an opportunity to dream up new worlds and strategize for the next ten years. We'll share stories and strategies with each other to ensure we are ready to rise to the occasion that decades of grassroots organizing and movement building have brought us.

We pivoted our work in 2020 to increase virtual space where we could continue to gather and be present with each other despite physical distance. We’ve been learning a lot along the way, and we are grateful to all who continue to join us in these spaces and at our virtual Homecoming this year.

We look forward to being in community with you.
